Unfortunately there are only ski trips four months of the year. During the rest of the year the 50+ Ski Club continues to have meetings and sponsors other types of activities. Below are examples of typical non-skiing activities.
Sixteen club members and friends traveled to South America and visited Rio de Janeiro, Iguazu Falls and Buenos Aires. In Rio they stayed at a hotel adjoining the beach. The scenery was spectacular. From Rio they went to Iguaza falls. Iguazu Falls are probably the most spectacular falls in the world. The countries visited on this trip were Brazil and Argentina.
There is a very active group of bike riders in the club. Almost every Wednesday in the Spring, Summer and Fall there is a ride of about 20 miles or so. The rides are usually scheduled and announced by Sunday night and club members are informed via email. Often a lunch is enjoyed after the ride. The day trips have been to Jones Beach, the Hamptons and other sites throughout Long Island. In one trip a group of 15 got an early start from the Mattituck high school parking area on a gorgeous Sunday morning in August. Luis recently led us on a 25 mile journey in and around the North Fork, including a rest stop at a winery in Cutchogue.
Another club favorite is water rafting on the Delaware River in the spring. Many members have landed in the water as they playfully drenched close by rafts with water. The club has also sponsored a canoe trip down one of the rivers on Long Island. This is an enjoyable trip that usually ends with dinner at a picturesque restaurant. Lately there have been hiking day trips in the fall and spring. They have become very popular.
The club has also sponsored a moonlit boat ride around the Statue of Liberty. This dinner cruise left Port Washington in the early evening and returned late at night. Steve recently gave took us on tour of the American Museum of Natural History. Some club members went on a trip to a spa in Mexico. Besides returning tanned, those who went had their bodies well tuned up for skiing.
